High-brightness LEDs are typically produced on Patterned Sapphire Substrates–PSS. Etching a nanoscale pattern on the sapphire wafer improves the epitaxial growth process and increases the LED’s light output. Rubicon plans to bring patterned six-inch wafers to market in 2013. This will provide a savings to our customers and will improve their cycle time. The availability of large-diameter PSS will also facilitate the transition to large-diameter wafers for additional LED chipmakers seeking the increased throughput and significant savings that six and eight inch wafers provide.
